n a not-so-secret move, Mcdonald’s opened up a new spinoff chain, primarily featuring a menu of customizable drinks… and it came from outer space. Here’s the rundown.
Mcdonald’s Cafe-style Spinoff and Its Out Of This World Drinks.
Cosmc’s, the new McDonald’s spinoff chain, opened its doors on December 7th. Located in Bolingbrook, Illinois, the restaurant is the company’s attempt to enter a new market.
Cosmc’s mission is to provide consumers with fully customizable beverages and snacks in a futuristic atmosphere. Named after Cosmc, McDonald’s alien mascot from the late 80’s, the storyline goes as such:
“IN ANOTHER GALAXY, COSMC BEGAN EXPERIMENTING WITH THESE MENU ITEMS ALONGSIDE SOME UNIQUE BEVERAGES; ONES THAT WOULD NOT ONLY COMPLEMENT THE FOOD, BUT STAND ALONE AS THE PERFECT MOOD BOOST FOR ALL BEINGS,”
Designing an exotic drinks menu, McDonald’s hopes to compete with Starbucks and Dunkin’ in the afternoon snack market.
As a part of a test, the chain is planning on opening ten more locations in Texas throughout 2024.
But what inspired McDonald’s to go above and beyond to create new drinks, let alone an entirely new restaurant to compete with giant rivals? It’s not just about taking advantage of beverage popularity…
It is an extremely calculated risk.
Blasting Off into Another Market.
This new menu foundation is built on 41 flavor combinations. With coffee and tea options, customers are encouraged to mix and match flavors to create their customized experience.
Further, the menu caters to the snackiness of the chain. These include
- Specialty Sandwiches
- Hashbrown Bites
- Filled Donuts
In the face of these new flavor combinations, the question remains: Why create a new chain in the first place?
A new chain lets the company focus on this initiative instead of splitting resources at existing restaurants. Had they simply expanded the menu with customizable drinks, McDonald’s would’ve been overwhelmed with longer wait times.
Not to mention, this move allows the chain to be a full-bodied competitor to the existing cafe-style restaurants.
Is This Mission Risky?
A whole new chain in a completely different market looks like a major jump from what the brand is known for…
YET, THIS RISK IS ALREADY PAYING OFF.
On opening day, cars were lining up to get to one of four drive-through lanes.
Mcdonald’s has been enjoying the onslaught of attention…
Especially when considering their more mascot-oriented marketing campaigns in the past.
The future is uncertain for Cosmc’s. But, the risk has the potential to take them to infinity and beyond…
Or crashing back down to earth.
Be Great,
